View Full Version : I'm really getting tired of these horrific "Driver Updates"

just2cool

The VIA envy audio chip is a great bang for the buck, however,
due to the lack of support that the customers get, I would have
rather bought a Turtle Beach or (gasp!) Creative card.

Why?

Well, I don't know about most people here, but I DO NOT CARE
ABOUT A NEW "PRETTY" INTERFACE (in 4.73b). There are
glaring flaws that have been in the drivers for quite some time now
- yet VIA does not fix them despite many people who post these
problems almost every week but no one responds.

Which problems am I talking about?

1. In high-sample rate mode, if you adjust the master volume it
only adjusts the right channel. Or, it adjusts the balance instead.
This has been going on since October of LAST YEAR. It’s
really annoying.

2. I do not have an EQ – in fact, I never did – and
probably never will.

3. This is a new problem - there is no longer a QSound checkbox
in the new drivers.

4. This is also a new problem – VIA posted a “new
guide for the drivers”. Well, anyone who has eyes can see
that it is an old guide using the old interface. Does VIA need
someone in their QA department?

Will these issues ever get fixed? Or will we all be forced to
buy a product that actually receives proper updates and
support… Here is a suggestion: Instead of wasting time
programming a new interface (nobody complained about the old one)
– why not listen to your customers and fix the actual
problems in your drivers – I am sure it would take less time
to do so.

I have probably wasted my time posting this as it will fall down
to the bottom of the pile without any replies – oh well.
Thanks for the wonderful support, VIA.

2) to see EQ, click on "sound effects", which is 5th
symbol down.

3) Not true, there is a Qsound checkbox, though it is well
hidden. Click "Advanced control and information" (6th
symbol), then click the blue down arrow thingy twice to see the
Qsound checkbox.

I'm not THAT stupid. Just look around the forum. You'll see
plenty of posts saying "I DON'T HAVE AN EQ!" or " I
DON'T HAVE QSOUND!" If you don't believe me, here are some
screenshots for you:

besides a good user interface is not a inferface that has
5.1/7.1 support "well hidden" omg.

you must be running a different version because your not seeing
the same thing as everyone else, something seriously wrong
has happend with the public release version.

I will post a message explaining how to fix your problem
shortly

Village Idiot
16-09-05, 04:32 PM
I believe the problem both of you are having, is bad registry
keys left from prior installs.

If you have only ever installed the 4.51c from VIA's
website, then you will not have this problem.

If you have EVER previously installed a driver from your
motherboardmaker's CD or website, then you may well have this
problem.

1. Uninstall VIA Envy24 Drivers through Control Panel 'Add and
Remove' Programs.

2. Click Start, Run and type regedit in box to remove the
Registry Entries which are as follows:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareVIA Technologies,INC.(DeleteFolder)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREVIATechnologies,INC.(Del eteFolder)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ServicesEnvyD efault(DeleteFolder)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ServicesEnvy2 4HFS(DeleteFolder)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet002ServicesEnvyD efault(DeleteFolder)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet002ServicesEnvy2 4HFS(DeleteFolder)

{Sorry this crappy forum nuked all the backslashes but you can
figure it out}

In total 6 entries deleted. You might try a search
forenvy24 to make sure you didn't miss anything else.

3. Reboot

4. Cancel the discovered hardware popup.

5. Install the via envy drivers again
http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1010&SubCatID=107

6. Enable Qsound for Games (Click "Advanced control and
information" (6th symbol), then click the blue down arrow
thingy twice to see the Qsound checkbox.)

7. Reboot

just2cool
16-09-05, 05:52 PM
Yes, I had a feeling you would say that (that's what I thought
initially as well).

But it isn't the case. I'm sure you've had an EQ before these
new drivers as well. I don't - and I've reformatted before - with
the same result.

But if you'd like to help us out - could you export

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VIA Technologies,INC.]

and

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VIATechnologies,INC.]

I would really appreciate it. Maybe I can fix this myself. If
you don't have space online or something, let me know and I'll give
you my email address.

I wonder if it is related to chip version? I have the "pt" version of the envy24, on a Shuttle SN25P.

Village Idiot

I uninstalled 4.51c and then installed the new driver, so there might be cruft left over from 4.51c here.

I appreciate the help - but I'm going to need all of the keys
just to make sure.

When I changed those - it didn't do anything different.

Most notably, I'm interested in ChipType in the HKCU \ VIA Tech
key. I have 388235267 as a decimal value. But yeah, if you could
extract the following from the registry and put all the .reg's in a
zip and post it here, it would really help (well, hopefully.)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VIA Technologies, INC.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VIA Technologies, INC.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\QSound Labs, Inc.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\QSound Labs, Inc. (If it exists - It
doesn't on my machine)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Envy24HFS

Also, I don't have an 'EnvyDefault' so export that, too.

Thanks!

I exported the entirety of HKCU/software/via technolgies above.
There are no other entries in this section beyond what I pasted above.
If you have a "chip type" entry in there, then that is an entry I do not have at all.
Perhaps this any other key from this section you don't see above you could consider deleting.

Same reply for HLM/software/Viatech, already pasted in entirety above.
Same reply for HLM/System/Currentcontrolset/Services/Envy24HFS, already pasted in entirety above.

I'm not sure what you are saying about "envydefault", I did a search in the registry for that string and didn't find it.
That leaves both the qsound entries which I haven't pasted above, so here they both are in their entirety.

Interesting...VI: I was referring to your post. You had
this:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet002Services EnvyDefault(DeleteFolder)So..yeah
I guess it wasn't important.

So your VIA in HKCU looks nothing like this?

http://b2k.pnt.net/shots/via4.jpg

Try to do a search for one of those keys..if nothing comes back
I guess our cards are just too different. I have the Chaintech
AV710 which is based on the Envy HT-S. Let me know.

Also, talos, that users key won't help you. Only the
CURRENT_USER matters - those S-X-X-X-X-X-X are other users on your
system. Same thing goes with ControlSetXXX - those are just backups
- like that "Last Known Good Configuration" option.
Although, there is a "Settings" that has a lot of
hardware information regarding the card, but I don't know if that
will help us.

I double checked, looks nothing like that. Did the driver install for the latest version really put all that stuff in there for you?
You can see in my registry above the section is totally empty, except for the subsection for Envy24 Family Audio Control Panel, which has only 3 entries in it. Perhaps you should uninstall, delete all those registry keys, and reinstall.

I did however find this:

Hmm..I'm going to look into all this. It turns out I have most of these keys as well (but Equalizer isn't even there). I might try an uninstall and registry clean again.

just2cool
17-09-05, 05:48 AM
Well, despite a lot of registry hacking and setup file hacking I
cannot enable QSound or the EQ in the GUI.

This leaves me to thefollowing3 conclusions:

1. The .INIs located in C:\Program Files\Audio Deck\ are the
settings preventing the GUI from showing the advanced controls.
Could you post the contents of: EnMixCPL.ini, (I doubt these other
two will help..but) Skin.ini and Language_0.ini.

2. The EQ/QSound are enabled, but not being shown in the GUI
(and can't be with my card). Could you set your EQ to something
very very harsh so I can try to import that Equalizer key into my
registry and see if I notice a difference?

It's located in:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0005\Q3d]

3. There is no possible way without the help of VIA that I can
enable/use QSound & the EQ. Unfortunately if this is the case,
anyone using a card similar to mine is just screwed - this is the
reason why I started this thread - lack of VIA support.

Again, thanks for trying, VI.

I have a Albatron K8X800 pro II motherboard with the ENVY PT
chip on it and I also had a little problem finding the Q-Sound
check box. the part of the control panel that I found to be missing
is the "send Center and LFE to R/L channel".I don't
have a 5.1 setup, just a 4.1 (no center or seperate subwoffer) and
the only way to get Doom III to work with surround before was to
setup a false 5.1 setup which worked great for movies to. but now I
cant seem to find that "send Center and LFE to R/L
channel"checkbox. So if anyone has found it please let
me know.

Thanks

Hey, guys, I have kind of been following this ( altho with all this Registry Editing, you are all way beyond me )
Check Out This Thread (http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.aspx?catid=17&threadid=68028&enterthread=y)
see if it helps you all and please let us know. I can and will archive this solution for future use.
Just 2 cool, as far as getting a Creative Crap Card or a Turtle Beach card, the Turtle's use VIA chips, but if
they implement the chips well, then it would be a good card.
And as for Creative, Read My Thread Here (http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.aspx?catid=34&threadid=67964&enterthread=y)
my recent experiences with a Creative card. Peace, Y'all. Chris.

Thank god I found this forum, as I for one dont have the Qsound
or EQ options either. I did have previous versions installed, so
maybe that is the problem. :/ I do have the Chaintech av710
mentioned by other users.

To above poster, I am quite hesitant in doing what you suggest,
do you mind posting where you found this "bios" and what
it actually does?

So anyone found a solution yet? Registry setting or .ini setting
perhaps?

Thanks

I edited the instructions, since I seem to have left out a step, where you reboot with the floppy in, and execute the program. The driver seems to check the EEPROM for a reference to QSound, and since these cards were originally using Sensaura, the QSound reference is not there, so none of the QSound settings are installed. This EEPROM is from the Maya II card which, which was posted on the Audiotrak website, and uses the envy chip also. I figured it might work, so I gave it a shot and I seem to be pleased with the results. I haven't tried digital out yet, but all the analog channels work, including the high sampling rate channels.

EEPROM mod works great on av-710, been running it for a few days
now and loving it, finally have an EQ!!! Dont worry, flashing is
easy and i have done it a bunch of times on this card trying to
enable the Qsound feature, and that mod mentioned above does the
trick, finally!!! Try it out, you dont like it, flash it back to
original that's all. And no one in this board is responsible for
damages to the card, just follow instructions that's all.

Why?

Well, I don't know about most people here, but I DO NOT
CAREABOUT A NEW "PRETTY" INTERFACE (in 4.73b). There
areglaring flaws that have been in the drivers for quite some time
now- yet VIA does not fix them despite many people who post
theseproblems almost every week but no one responds.

Which problems am I talking about?

1. In high-sample rate mode, if you adjust the master volume
itonly adjusts the right channel. Or, it adjusts the balance
instead. This has been going on since October of LAST YEAR.
It’sreally annoying.

2. I do not have an EQ – in fact, I never did –
andprobably never will.

3. This is a new problem - there is no longer a QSound
checkboxin the new drivers.

4. This is also a new problem – VIA posted a
“newguide for the drivers”. Well, anyone who has eyes
can seethat it is an old guide using the old interface. Does VIA
needsomeone in their QA department?

Will these issues ever get fixed? Or will we all be forced tobuy
a product that actually receives proper updates andsupport…
Here is a suggestion: Instead of wasting timeprogramming a new
interface (nobody complained about the old one)– why not
listen to your customers and fix the actualproblems in your drivers
– I am sure it would take less timeto do so.

I have probably wasted my time posting this as it will fall
downto the bottom of the pile without any replies – oh
well. Thanks for the wonderful support, VIA.

I TOTALLY AGREE. VIA gave us a somewhat pretty, but
extremely confusing interface and then broke the left/right sound
problem again. I was not able to compensate by maximizing the
volume on both sides with the master volume sliders locked. I
had to revert back to 4.51C. I didn't get a EQ or QSound in
the new drivers either. I had to mod the card with a EEPROM
change and that only caused more problems, although I finally saw
EQ and QSound in the new drivers, but it was pretty useless as I
could not get the Wolfson DAC to operate properly with the EEPROM
change--only got static.

FORGET VIA. I am SICK of VIA. They screw up
everything they touch. I am now order a Bluegears HDA Digital
X-Mystique as I am typing this!

You seem to be very angree. You don't have to.

Just don't use the new Envy Audio Deck, use the old one that has

No, it doesn't. He has an AV710 like me and we've never had the EQ. Without the maya firmware there is no way AV710 owners can use the EQ w/QSound.

formatting your hard drive so you can get a sound card to work
like it advertises is simply retarded. Any sound card that gives
you this much trouble is only worth a return to the store you
bought it from. I flashed the eeprom and did all this garbage with
no success. Screw VIA and screw any idiot company that decides to
carry such a bogus chip. You guys do realize this isnt even a true
96/24 card rite?
