I have a thread in the SATA section, but no answers to my problem. This is more a Rant than a query (but if anyones got an answer to my problem I'll take it.)

Its about time manufacturers like VIA and Pioneer stated on their products what will and what will not work. It looks like I'm going to have to throw away a Brand new Pioneer DVR215 SATA drive, because it will not work with the VIA chipset thats on my Motherboard (ASRock4CoreDual-VSTA).

Neither ASRock - VIA - or Pioneer can give me a satisfactory answer as to why this is. Apparently according to Pioneer there are two DVD-RW Manufacturers ASUS - Pioneer that make "Native" SATA DVD-Rw's. All the rest are Hybrids (something to do with the burners using a hybrid ATA/SATA bridge). Dont ask me, I'm not that technical minded.

So i have to either purchase a PCI SATA card or a New Motherboard or an IDE burner. forget the 1st two, too expensive, so its an IDE burner i have to get. It would be nice if, when you research a Piece of Hardware if it said " I only work on Intel - Nvidia chipsets"

Rant ended

cheers

So $11.99 is too expensive. What you get for that price : Newegg.com - Rosewill RC-215 VIA PCI SATA 1.5G x2/ ATA 133 (IDE) x1 HDD Controller Card Supports Raid 0, 1, 0+1, JBOD, un-RAID mode - Retail (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816132012)

By the time International shipping charges + $US to $AUS conversion are added, I'd say Yes I'ts too expensive.:)

Is the Pioneer DVR215 SATA drive SATA2 revision 2.5?

ASRock4CoreDual-VSTA has SATA1 chipset revision 1 on it, so they may be incompatible IMO.

I dont know what revision it is but it's SATA2, as it has that "safely remove hardware" icon in the tray(Hot swappable). and i updated the Mobo chipset drivers to Via's latest ones.

I would visit the 4CoreDual-VSTA thread over at Anandtech Forums and ask if anyone else has this problem. There is a fairly large cult following of the ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA, 775Dual-VSTA, and variants over there:

ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA (http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=29&threadid=1960908) @ Anandtech Forums

Installing the Hyperion Pro 4-in-1 could also be the problem. VIA's storage driver refinement isn't exactly well known for its...ehh...refinement.

Also check for firmware updates (http://www.pioneer.com.au/productscroll/computer_peripherals/firmware).

Thanks for reply and the link, I have installed the latest firmware (1.18) and why would the Hyperion pro 4-in-1 be a problem, I downloaded the latest (2.30a) SATA drivers from VIA, but it fails the install, Do i have to uninstall the Hyperion pro 4-in-1 before i try to install the 2.30a SATA driver.

I even tried to install the ones that are on the Motherboard disc, but that failed as well.

What happens if you manually install the drivers through the device manager.
