I am working with an existing motherboard that has been in opperation for 3 years. I went to up grade the memory from 512 to 1GB. I put the new memory in and all I got was a long beep that repeated itself every couple of seconds. I put the original memory back in and I am still getting the beep tones. I there anything that I can do to correct this problem?

Try reseating the original ram stick first in the slot it originally worked in and then, if still no joy, try the other slot. Before re-inserting it, though, try blowing any dust or debris out of the slot. Also worth trying is clearing the bios in case it has, for some reason, stopped reading the ram properly. If you get the old stick working again and still want to try the bigger stick, first make certain the board can handle the stick design and size. Some boards, for example, don't like double-sided ram and still others will refuse to run on high-density ram, so make certain what you have is compatible with the board. Doing a Google search on the original stick's numbers should get you the info on the type of ram the board was working with for comparison.

Also make sure that a power or IDE connector didn't come loose with all the pushing on the board.
