Default VIA EPIA M10000 HTPC

I have recently been trying to build a HTPC using the EPIA m10000 platform. I decided to use Element as it seemed like a simple enough interface. All I need out of the machine is to be able to play video, surf the net, and watch hulu and youtube videos. I installed Element and all was fine but when I went to watch anything on hulu it was unacceptably choppy. It is not my internet connection because other pcs in the house work just fine. When I play movies from the drives or even a USB flash drive they are fine, no choppiness whatsoever. So I am beginning to think that maybe it could have something to do with Element not supporting Unichrome drivers for graphics acceleration maybe?? I'm at my wits end here. Anyways I was wondering if there would be a better linux distro to serve my purposes. After looking through all the postings I am even more flustered with all the choices. It is going to be hooked up to a reg. tv. And I would like to stay away from anything microsoft based mainly because microsoft is evil, lol.
I actually started off by installing Ubuntu 10.10 but was not working properly, had the login loop thing going on and got frustrated with that. So basically what I am looking for is a linux based OS that is compatible with all my onboard hardware and has a simple GUI. I'm a noob so any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm hooked on Mythtv now. I started last month buying a used Xbox to use with XBMC just to get AVI file easily up to my TV on my home network.
