Hi all,

I am facing quite a peculiar problem that I hope someone can help.

I have the ASUS motherboard M3N78 with the VIA audio chip VT1708B.
I am currently running Windows 7 which installed a working audio driver (provided by Microsoft) but I couldn't use more than 2 channels.
I have tried installing the update from ASUS website but installing that update renders the hardware not usable (i.e. no sound at all)!
What makes it more interesting is that when I try to configure/test the hardware using Windows' audio configuration tool,
it complains that the test audio cannot be played (2ch) or the format is not supported when 4ch or more was selected.

Being referred to VIA by ASUS and to here by VIA technical people, I have found and tried the driver on the driver portal website and v10100 in this post.
Unfortunately, I face the same problem with the "old" update from the ASUS website.

I have read this post (and few others), I do not see anyone having the same problem.
Did I do something wrong? Can someone advise me what I can do/test/check?

Hi everyone.
Thanks to this thread I was able to update my audio drivers for my VIA chip (VT1708b), which I didn´t have any problem to begin with.
I was using the version 7600 since it´s the latest version available in the asus website for my motherboard.

First I tried, off course, the latest version (10100) but I faced 2 problems: 1st the audio deck only let me enable 6 channels, not a real issue to me since I use a z5500 system that is only 5.1; the other was a problem with the volume, the center speaker was too loud and the sub too low.
Note that I always have max volume on the pc and just use the speaker fill function on the audio deck, for room correction and volume control I use the speeker´s panel.

Since that I was trying other versions and found that the version 9600 is the best one.
I can enable 8 channels and the volume from the center speaker is correct. The sub is still a bit low but I raised it a bit on the panel and now is perfect.
Music sounds great, specially flac tracks, even better that my original 7600 version.
I need to test games now, maybe Ill start with Battlefield 3 which sounds great in surround, and Ill post feedback later.

Are you sure about that? I had a M3N78-EM with a Realtek chip on it.
Which type of M3N78 board do you have?
Could you post the hardware id's of the sound chip?
