Control audio output from application

I have a need to send audio to either headphones or internal speakers (at different times) from within my application, headphones are always plugged in. I have seen in the VIA Audio Deck that it is possible to set it up for 'independent headphone' control, and have run its speaker test to confirm this is possible. Can anyone point me to documentation or sample code that shows me how to do this?
