YW,
But when you switch between speakers and headset using an external switch, you don't really need to unplug/switch the microphone do you?

You could also combine the usage of your onboard or pci card. For example keep your headset wired to the pci card and external speakers to your onboard card. It should be no problem to have them both enabled.
When necessary, make one or the other the default output.

Been there done that! It should work fine as long as you keep a close eye on your 'default' playback/recording settings, volume sliders, mute checkboxes...

Or the position of your external switch ;-)
Good luck with your 'experiment'!
