Problem with VT6212L PCI USB card
Dear readers.
Recently I bought an PCI USB card. (VIA VT6212L)
I use Windows Vista on an Asus P5W DH Deluxe motherboard with an Intel Duo Core 2 processor.
The card is installed correctly and is showing up in device manager. (it shows up with three items refering to the VIA card.) No exclamation marks.
When I attach an USB device to the card the computer freezes. I have to reset it manualy because it responds to nothing. It doesn't mather what kind USB device I attach, I tried different ones on different ports. I tried to use another PCI slot in the computer but with the same effect.
The Bios for my motherboard is the most recent just as all the other Asus motherboard drivers and I did also try some different settings in the Bios regarding USB. (although I believe that most of these settings refer to the standard USB ports on the motherboard). Because the installer of the drivers don't work on Vista I thought it may be an issue with the OS. So I did a clean install of Windows XP SP2 on my computer. Guess what?
same effect....
So I really don't know what to do next.
I have unpluged the card now and see if there is anyone who can help me out.

Problem with VT6212L PCI USB card
Try the PCI/USB card in another computer to see if it works.

Problem with VT6212L PCI USB card
I installed the card in another computer. It has a Asus P4S8X motherboard with a P4 processor.
Os is Windows XP SP2.
The card works perfectly in this one. I tried different USB devices and all went smooth.
So it must be something with my new computer, but what?
I did search the internet for simular problems with the motherboard but could not find any.
Here more info about my system:
MB= Asus P5W DH Deluxe with AM Bios 2004 (7-3-2007)
Intel duo Core 2 CPU 2,4 Ghz.
Windows Vista 32 bit with all latest updates
Raid 0 2x maxtor 250 GB harddrives
ATI Radeon X1950XTX graphics
2 gig ram Kingston memory
Intel 82801 GB USB Universal controller
My guess is that is has to be something with the MB.

Problem with VT6212L PCI USB card
Go to Device Manager and see if you have a shared IRQ. Here is the way to go there: Start --> Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Computer Management --> Device Manager. Now go to View and choose the third option "Sources by type" and see if it shares an IRQ. If it does move the PCI-USB card to another PCI slot and see what happens and check the IRQ again.

Problem with VT6212L PCI USB card
I have three empty pci slots in my PC. I only tried two of them the first time because when placing the USB card in the third it sits next very close to the graphics card (wich is really big).
This time I tried altough that slot and the card is working correctly now.
I see no shared recources in device manager. In the occasions where the card didn't work I did not check that. The only question that keeps me busy now is why it does mather wich slot you should use.
Anyway, thanks for the help.

Problem with VT6212L PCI USB card
The problem lies in sharing and Interrupt ReQuest (IRQ) line. Sometimes one device dominates the line; I assume it gives lots of requests or its drivers have a higher priority so the other card doesn't get much of an opportunity.

Problem with VT6212L PCI USB card
Well I was happy to early I guess, because the problem is back.
What did I do?
Unplugged a MS sidewinder pro USB joystick, pluged in a USB memory stick, Unpluged the USB stick, Restarted Windows and the next day I pluged the joystick back in. Windows did not see it but did also not freeze.
I tried to plug in another device and bingo! it freezes. Now I am back at the start.
I did check the devicemanager IRQ as you mentioned and these ones have the same numbers now:
(PCI) 20 Intel(r) 82801 GB USB Universal Host controller (appearing two times)
(PCI) 21 Texas Instruments OHCI Complient IEEE1394 Host controller
(PCI) 21 VIA Rev of later USB universal host-controller
(PCI) 23 Intel(r) 82801 GR/GH SATA RAID controller
(PCI) 23 VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller
I hope you have a idea what to do. Every PCI slot in my pc does gives the same problem. I know that now for 100% sure.

Problem with VT6212L PCI USB card
Are there updated drivers for the joystick available? Did you try all the PCI slots?

Problem with VT6212L PCI USB card
There are no updated drivers for Vista for this joystick but Windows did recognise it the first time I pluged it in. I don't think it has to do something with the joystick altough because when I plug it in at one of the standard on board USB ports it does work normal. Just as all other USB devices.
The problem is really the PCI USB card wich I did try on all available PCI slots as mentioned before.
What I have figured out so far is that the problem lies in the fact that the card is sharing the same IRQ recources as some other devices in my PC (as mentioned om previous post) and there is no way that I can change that. Somehow the card is forced to work at these adresses. If you know a way of changing them please let me know.
So far I have concluded that:
1. My PCI USB VT 6212 L card does not work on an Asus P5W DH Deluxe MB with activated RAID controllers because these use the same IRQ adresses and are conflicting altough this is not shown by a yellow exclamation mark.
2. I DID try every empty PCI slot with same result. (computer freezes when plugging in USB device on card)
3. The card DOES work normal on an other PC, so the card itself is not defected
thanks for you help.
