Hi,

I have a fresh installation of Windows XP Pro and the first thing I am installing is the audio drivers from the driver cd. The pc asks about trusting the driver and I tell it to continue anyway and then it restarts (failing to install). The cd I am using is the A8V-MX Series (VIA K8M800 Chipset Support CD rev.151.01) and the pc details are below:

-------[ Summary ]-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Computer:
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Professional
OS Service Pack Service Pack 2
Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180
Computer Name FAIRY

Motherboard:
CPU Type Unknown, 2000 MHz (10 x 200)
Motherboard Name Unknown
Motherboard Chipset VIA VT8383/5 Apollo K8T800(M), AMD Hammer
System Memory 512 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM)
BIOS Type AMI (10/09/04)

A8V-MX

Realtek ALC653 AC'97 Audio CODEC

Select AC97 Audio Codecs then download the newest driver for your operating system.

Yeah I tried that... It does the same thing. PC restarts at the same spot.

I know there is nothing wrong with any of the hardware as I have two computers that are exactly the same and they both react the same to this audio driver update.

This strikes me as a bit peculiar. Are you certain about the make and model of your motherboard? The AV8-MX was released in August 2005, the BIOS for this board would not likely be dated 2004.

Run the BIOS Agent utility from eSupport:

http://download.esupport.com/biosagent/ba.exe

Click get BIOS info button and paste the following fields:

BIOS Date
BIOS ID
BIOS OEM Sign-on

When closing BIOS Agent, click No when asked to submit your request.

Well that didn't turn up anything conclusive. It looks as though this BIOS ID may correspond to an ASUS K8V-X Socket 754 K8T800, not the A8V-MX which is Socket 939 K8M800, but I couldn't confirm it.

You will have to visually confirm the motherboard you have, by looking for identifying print or markings on the motherboard that may indicate a model name or number. Use the product photos for K8V-X and A8V-MX available from the ASUS URLs provided here.

It is also possible that this is an OEM ASUS model used by a PC company. Did you purchase the motherboard individually or was it part of a computer system?

If the board is K8V-X, it uses an ADI audio codec, not VIA. Those drivers would have to come from ASUS by navigating to the downloads for this model. ADI does not make drivers available for download by the public.

You are right it does appear to be a K8V-X.

I will try the audio driver from that page...

That did the trick! Thanks tcsenter!

I used the WDM_3663.exe file for the audio and all works well.

I see the maker of your computer has gone bust but if the board's model is D865GLC it is a Intel board if my research is correct so it has a ADI sound chip.

Where did you find it was a Realtek sound chip.

use the ID software first to make sure it is the correct board.

If the board is Intel you can use a automatic download and install for drivers found on this page http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/highlights/dsktpboards/d865glc
